The European Space Agency (ESA) is spearheading a series of cutting-edge Earth observation missions as part of the collaborative ESA/European Commission endeavor, Copernicus (formerly known as GMES - Global Monitoring for Environment and Security).

This initiative aims to replace existing and aging Earth observation missions like ERS and Envisat, which are either at or nearing the end of their operational lifespan. By doing so, it ensures a continuous stream of data to avoid interruptions in ongoing research.
